Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)

"King of Hearts"
Nashville, Tennessee - Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is an open heart surgery performed for patients with coronary artery disease. CABG is usually indicated when there are multiple severe blockages in the arteries of the heart.
Most patients are surprised to learn that even thought the heart is full of blood, the heart muscle receives its nourishment from arteries on the outer surface of the heart, called coronary arteries. Instead of removing the blockages in the coronary arteries, it is actually safer and more effective to create a surgical bypass around the blockage in order to provide improved blood flow to the heart muscle.

Dr. Grayson Wheatley is a Heart and Vascular Surgeon and Director of Aortic and Endovascular Surgery at TriStar Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, TN
There are two methods of performing CABG procedures. The first involves connecting the patient's heart to the heart-lung machine (called cardiopulmonary bypass machine). This allows the heart to be temporarily stopped so that the bypass can be sewn to the coronary arteries on the surface of the heart. The second method is called "off-pump" CABG. With this technique, the heart is not connected to the heart lung machine and the bypass are sewn to the surface of the heart while the heart remains beating.
Dr. Wheatley performs both on-pump and off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting procedures.
