"Cutting-edge Surgery Without The Cutting"

Nashville, Tennessee - Aneurysms of the aorta can arise either in the chest (near the heart) or abdomen (stomach region) - or both.  An aortic aneurysm refers to a weakness, or bulge, in a section of the aorta (main blood vessel of the heart) which is connected to the heart and carries blood pumped from the heart to the rest of the body.

In the past, open heart surgery was the only treatment option for thoracic aortic aneurysms (chest) and open abdominal surgery was required for stomach aneurysms (AAA, or abdominal aortic aneurysms).

The aorta can degenerate in a number of ways including atherosclerotic, degenerative aortic aneurysms, aortic dissections and pseudoaneurysms.

Newer, less-invasive techniques have been developed - many of which we helped perfect - which eliminate the large incisions, decreases pain and expedites the recovery process.

Watch Dr. Grayson Wheatley Perform a minimally-invasive TEVAR Procedure for a Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm

These new minimally-invasive aortic aneurysm repair techniques rely on new medical devices called "aortic stent-grafts" or "endoluminal grafts".  These devices are inserted through the artery in the groin region and are guided into place using x-rays.

TEVAR, or Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair, is the name of a cutting-edge procedure that requires a great deal of expertise and experience to successfully perform.  It is an option for many patients with aortic aneurysms in the chest - specifically in the aortic arch and descending thoracic aorta.
